Portable Fuel Containers – Using the right type with your stove will help you make a great meal and have a full tummy when you have reached the end of your day.

There are many different types of portable fuel containers available on the market today. The major difference between them is generally due to the type of stove they are to be used with. There are portable fuel containers for alcohol, white or unleaded gas, propane, butane, and solid fuel.

Esbit Fuel Tablets are odorless, smokeless, non-explosive tabs that burn for 12 minutes each.  They are great for cooking, heating, and fire-starting.  Because the fuel tabs are small and lightweight, you can have several boxes of tabs with you on your trek.  What you don’t use can be saved for the next trip.

Accessories for some of the various portable fuel containers include pumps, connectors and quick disconnects, pour spouts, and carry cases (soft and hard) to help carry and maintain the equipment.

Alcohol and white or unleaded gas can generally be carried in the same types of portable fuel containers.  These are generally made from extruded aluminum so there are no seams and they are very light and sturdy.  The MSR Fuel Bottle is designed to work with the threaded pumps on MSR stoves.

These kinds of portable fuel containers have usually had the base and shoulders reinforced for added strength and safety. You do not want to take the normal metal can that you purchased along with you. The chance of the lid leaking is too high and it is too easy to poke a hole in the side of the can.

Propane and butane are under pressure so you will need to be careful when using these types of portable Fuel Canister. Do not throw them into the fire, leave them out in the sun, or poke holes in them. You will need to bring these back with you so you can have them refilled as necessary.

Anytime you are using portable fuel containers, remember that safety is paramount. Never be careless. Never attach to your stove or fill from your portable fuel containers around an open fire. Be sure to give yourself plenty of space between you and an open fire. Remember, you get crispy critters from a forest fire, so you don’t want to make yourself one of those crispy critters by being careless.

As you spend your time communing with nature, remember to keep your stoves working correctly by the use of the proper portable fuel containers.
